How to Hire a Great Writer and Keep Him Happy

Want to hire a great writer? You can. However, the quality of the work your writer does for you depends on your interactions with him.

Any writer can be a great writer for you. Your writer is your voice, and good communications with him will help your project to succeed.

Start by getting clear what you want. Your writer can’t read your mind. Send your writer everything you have that’s related to the project, such as URLs, marketing collateral, competitor information, and a clear description of the project.

If you’re not sure of exactly what you need, discuss it with your writer. An experienced writer has a lot of information to share. Get the writer on board as soon as possible: before you hire a graphic designer.

When you send your writer the project brief (description), an experienced writer will parrot the brief back to you, in his own words. If the writer doesn’t do this, ask: “Just so we’re on the same page, please tell me how you see the project. What will you be doing for us?”

This ensures that you get what you need.

Your writer should have writing samples to show you. It’s a good idea to work with him on a short project initially, so you can see how much guidance he requires.

That said, resist the temptation to micro-manage. Set clear milestones. Insist that your writer meets his commitments to you. (State this up front.) If you expect a report from him on Friday morning, call him at 1 PM on Friday afternoon if it isn’t in your email Inbox. Some writers will procrastinate, if you don’t insist.

Be prepared to pay a deposit, and to make regular milestone payments. Lay this out in your agreement with the writer. Your writer has a livelihood to maintain, just as you do. Remember that the copyright to the material your writer writes for you remains with him, until he’s paid in full — only then does the copyright devolve to you.

A great writer is worth much more than his weight in gold to your business. Communicate well with him, and you’ll get what you need — indeed, you’ll get material that’s beyond your expectations. You’ll also be your writer’s dream client, and he’ll be a loyal member of your team for years to come.
