Web sales pages: are you getting the results you want?

by angela.booth on March 21, 2010

A couple of years ago I wrote an article called “Copywriting – Sizzling Sales Pages coin Money for You” for new web copywriters. Reading the article today, it occurred to me that it’d be useful for anyone who’s writing web sales pages for their business. So here’s the (considerably revised) article.

These four tips will help you to write sales pages which sell.

1. Use suspense to keep prospects reading down the page

Your primary aim is to keep your page’s visitors reading, and you can use various devices for this. Here’s a simple strategy: get them curious in your first paragraph, and make the payoff halfway down the page.

However, before you pay off on the first question you’ve planted, plant another one. Curiosity is powerful. A novelist uses this strategy right throughout a book. Since sales pages are much shorter than novels, you won’t have to work as hard to keep them reading. :-)

2. Remember to put yourself in the shoes of the customer

When you write sales copy, put yourself in the shoes of the customer. Ask yourself questions – who, what, why, when, where and how?, and answer those questions before you start writing.

Research online, as well as offline. Are there competing products? (There usually are.) What makes your product different and better?

3. Test your headline – create at least two headlines, for split testing

It’s often said that the headline is the most important part of a sales page. While this is true – without an attention-grabbing headline you won’t get a chance to make your offer – the offer is just as important as the headline.

Your offer MUST be compelling. The purchase should be a no-brainer.

Create two versions of your sales page with two different headlines to split test the sales page. Of course when you change the headline, you’ll need to edit the sales page slightly to conform to the new headline.

4. Keywords are vital for free traffic

Keywords are vital when writing sales pages.

If you omit keywords, you’ll miss out on free traffic over the coming days and weeks. So choose two or three keywords, and include them on the sales page.
