All writers should learn copywriting

by angela.booth on May 16, 2008

Recently I posted the article “Writing Articles for the Web – Build your Income Fast” on my Fab Freelance Writing Blog.

Mike made this (valid) comment:

The web is growing at an alarming rate and the demand for content is growing just as fast. That might seem like a win for the writer, but only for the one who can crank out content on the cheap. Unfortunately, that’s not a good business practice.

I responded:

Mike, I completely agree with you… but the money quote in your comment is “Now, it may be that I’m just not finding the high-paying article markets, but it’s not for a lack of looking.”

You shouldn’t be looking… clients should be approaching you. This is what I try to get through to Web writers. But it’s the old story, you don’t know what you don’t know. :-)

Web writers should MARKET. When you market, people come to you.

If you’re running a business, you must market, or you’ll go out of business

Marketing is essential for all businesses, whether you’re a giant multinational corporation, or a humble Web writer.

Unfortunately, most writers are extremely naive. Many get scammed because they are so naive and trusting.

I wrote two posts on my writing blog to help:

Avoid Writing Income Disasters with These Five Tips – Part One

and

Avoid Writing Income Disasters with These Five Tips – Part Two

In Avoid Writing Income Disasters with These Five Tips – Part Two, I wrote “Writers need to learn self-promotion, and then they need to promote themselves.”

Copywriting (marketing writing) is an essential skill for writers. I began my writing career as a romance novelist, and got into copywriting because I was writing advertising for a business I was running, and was asked to write copy for other business owners.

I learned the power of copywriting – I could see the results in business profits immediately.

There’s a big difference between a writer who’s paid $5 for a Web article and one who’s paid $250 for a similar article: the $250 writer has learned to MARKET and has basic copywriting skills.

If you’re a writer – any kind of writer – learn copywriting.

Become a copywriter and get paid to write

Did you know that most business people struggle with their writing? It’s true. If you enjoy writing and find it easy, you can write for money, for business. In short, you can become a copywriter.

Copywriting is writing for business: promotional writing. Copywriters write material like advertisements and compared to most writers, they’re VERY highly paid.

The explosion of the influence of the Web means that copywriters are flooded with offers of work. Even new copywriters find it easy to get copywriting gigs and to build their copywriting services business.
