Your site’s magical keywords: an SEO secret?

by angela.booth on January 15, 2008

There are no secrets to Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The search engines are indexing software, and if your keywords aren’t on your site’s pages, the pages can’t rank for those keywords.

Elementary, yes?

It may be elementary, but it’s easy to miss. You get so tied up in posting pages to your site: you have technical hassles, you can’t get the images to display correctly, and your shopping cart goes on the fritz. In all the messing around, it’s easy to forget keywords, until you wonder why you’re not ranking for certain terms.

Often, the terms you want to rank for are not even mentioned on the page.

SEO Newsletter – BACK TO BASICS: Site Relevancy and Keyword Usage says: “Are the keywords you want to rank for actually being used on pages of your site? If not, you are not alone. Failure to use the keywords on pages of your site is a common search engine optimization mistake. Likewise, using keywords you want to rank for in Meta tags but then not using them anywhere in the body content of Web pages is another common misstep on the road to getting ranked.”

So, while SEO is essentially not rocket science, and there are no secrets, it’s easy to make fundamental mistakes, because while you’re managing your site, you’re not thinking about SEO.

Tip: create an SEO checklist for your site, and for every page on your site which you want to rank. Ensure that the keywords for which you want to rank (a maximum of two or three per page) are actually on the page. Then promote the pages, and get links to them. Once the pages are indexed, check once a month to see how they’re ranking.
