You’ve developed a new Web site, and like all site owners, you want to get lots of traffic from the search engines immediately.

That can happen, but with a new site it’s unlikely. New sites spend from six to 12 months in the “sandbox”. A sandboxed site won’t appear in the search engine results for the keywords it’s targeting.

Anatomy of a site in the Google Sandbox reports: “BlogStorm is about 4 months old and is firmly in the Google Sandbox. In this blog post I want to show people exactly what happens to new sites in 2007 and how Google handles the increase in trust as a site ages.”

The solution to the sandbox

The solution to the sandbox effect is simple: don’t count on the search engines for free traffic until your site is a year old. You may get some traffic, but count on marketing to be your primary driver of traffic to your site for at least 12 months.

Done well, your marketing efforts will bring you consistent, reliable traffic. You won’t miss the search engines. The extra traffic you get when you’re released from the sandbox will just be a nice bonus.
