Every site needs to be optimized for the search engines. Therefore, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a must for any site. However, there’s one step you need to take before you spend the time, energy and money on optimizing your site’s pages.

Test your site’s pages: do they convert or not?

You must test your site’s pages. After all, if your site doesn’t represent your offerings accurately, and if people won’t take action on your pages, there’s no point to SEO.

“For a New Site, PPC First, Then SEO” describes the process perfectly, but I’d argue that the “PPC first, then SEO”, process works for ANY site, not just for new sites.

Create a couple of landing pages which describe your site’s offerings and test them via PPC campaigns. These pages should work to funnel your traffic to an order page or to a “Get more info” page: any page on which your visitors can TAKE ACTION. Once you’ve got a landing page that converts at at least five per cent, you’ve know you’ve got a great offer, and it’s worth adding more content and focusing on SEO for selected pages.
