SEO: how competitive are your keywords?
Keywords are the secret to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) success — the right keywords, that is.
Type your top keywords into Google’s or Yahoo’s search query box, and look at the competition for your keywords. If you find that your chosen keywords are ultra-competitive, with millions of pages, you need a strategy.
Get specific with your keywords
Here’s the strategy: if your keywords are very competitive, you need to become more specific.
For example, when I typed “beautician” into Google, the query returned 1.5 million pages. Typing “beautician Sydney” returned 45,000 pages — which is still too competitive. However, when I typed “beautician Sydney Bondi”, the search returned just 268 pages.
I could become even more specific, and narrow my niche down even further, and if I were implementing a SEO project for a client, I would, but you get the idea. The more specific you make your keywords, the less competition you will have. You’ll get a chance to appear on Page One of the Search Query Results Pages (SERPs), and SEO will begin to work for you.
