When I’m creating Web pages for clients, convincing them that they should link out to resources that their visitors will find useful is a real battle. Mostly I lose the battle — it’s their site, and their money, after all.
So I’m always searching for information which will boost my “Please LINK, already” case.
Does linking out to trusted related sites help? Hell Yea – most of the time doing this will give you a boost. I’m not even going to bother to back this up with specific examples. If you don’t want to believe this, that fine. Many people don’t believe a lot of what I say like “link pages are dead” or “the sandbox is real” or that “pagerank is dead”. People are fee to believe whatever they want.
I’m convinced there’s a psychological influence at work too. If you’re happy to say — “look, you’ll find more information here, and here, and here” — then it shows that you’re trying to be helpful, you’re not just trying to sell. If you encourage people to leave, they often want to stay, or at least come back.
