Developing content is a great marketing strategy for your Web site. You can market your Web site with free content in two ways: you can use the content to lead search-engine traffic to your site where you sell goods and services, and/ or you can sell advertising on your site.
During Web Boom 1.0 (circa late 1990s) many companies tossed content online like they were tossing a salad. They assumed that the answer to the “What’s your business model?” question would emerge from all that content. Sadly for many companies it didn’t.
Then along came Google AdWords and AdSense. (In 2003, many commentators wondered WHY Google would buy Blogger.com. It seems obvious now.)
In Web 2.0, the buzz is in user-generated content. Digg.com for example uses links and user-generated content and has a great business model. John Dvorak has a (deliberately and amusingly) provocative story on Digg.com — the company generates brilliant buzz effortlessly.
If you can get your visitors to generate content, you’re onto a very good thing, but most sites find it difficult to do. However, you can create content and reap the benefits.
