Hosted or free? The blogging dilemma

by angela.booth on June 24, 2006

I’m not a geek, I’m a writer. But I’m also a tinkerer. If you’ve been reading this blog for any time at all you know that you’re never sure what you’ll find when you visit — what kind of template-horror I’ll inflict on you next.

WordPress is free, and brilliant, but…
This is a WordPress blog. I love WordPress as a blogging-enabler. It’s a terrific platform for both personal and professional bloggers. However, unless you’re a geek, you’re likely to have problems. Some things work, others don’t. I’ve installed numerous WordPress templates which just didn’t work as advertised, and installed plug-ins with hassles that I couldn’t fix.

The dilemma: it’s free, but to get it fixed, you need to pay.

My other primary blog is hosted and runs on TypePad. Although TypePad isn’t all that configurable for a non-geek, with a hosted blog, you’ve got someone to call when things go wrong.

When your blog is hosted, you’re limited to someone else’s choices
I’m keeping my TypePad blog, it’s comfortable — with a hosted blog, you can relax.

I’m such a fan of hosted blogs that I’ve also signed up for a Squarespace trial. Squarespace looks like a baby CMS. I like the look of the Squarespace blogs/ CMS, but… it’s the control thing again.

If you run a free CMS like Joomla, you can tinker to your heart’s content, but you WILL have problems.

The dilemma: when it’s hosted, you get the options someone else thinks you should have, but when things go wrong, you’ve paid to ensure they’re fixed.

The answer? Your answer depends on YOU. I guess I’ll keep muddling along with both free and hosted options. :-)
