Many content management systems (CMS) create URLs which are anything but “search-engine friendly”. That is, the URLs tend to be filled with a lot of numbers, where you would really love to be able to put some keywords.
I’m struggling with the issue of will I/ won’t change the URLs myself in a new Joomla-based site I’m creating. From what I’ve read about the hassles that others have had however, I’ve decided to leave the URLs as they are. I’ve never noticed that the search engines had any problems indexing another couple of CMS-based sites I’ve worked on.
Search-engine expert Jill Whalen agrees:
I would highly recommend that you leave the URLs exactly as they are. If you have some SEO company telling you to change them, you should be extremely skeptical as to whether they really know what they’re doing and whether they understand the ramifications of what they’re recommending.
Although the Joomla site is new, and I COULD change the URLs, I won’t. I just haven’t found that URL-structure is all that important, and in 12 months if I radically change the site, I don’t want to find that my early-tinkering has lead to untold agony in the future.
