I work with many companies which are newish to the Web, and it’s hard to convince them to link to others, but if you want higher rankings, you must link.

The Web is built on links; it’s a WEB. No Web site is an island. So, if you want to be found online, since there’s no Internet Information Desk with bureaucrats manning it around the clock, the only way to be found is if someone links to you.

You get links by linking to others, when relevant. In turn, other people (not the same people often, but it doesn’t matter) will link to you.

How To Score Higher in Google Search Engine notes that:

The most important rule for scoring higher on Google, however, is to make your site useful. Simply put, the best way to get your site to score higher on Google is to put something useful there — have your site bring some benefit to someone. It is difficult to stress this enough. Make your site helpful.

So make your site useful, link to others, and others will link to you.
