Blogging career: your blog’s mission
I’ve just replied to a new blogger who asked: “How can I make money blogging? I enjoy blogging and I’d like to make blogging my career.”
Here’s my response.
You can certainly make a career out of blogging. Many people do, and the number of career bloggers is growing all the time.
The first step is to choose a topic/ subject area for your blog, and a mission for the blog. For example, you might decide to create a blog on digital photography. Your blog’s mission could then be to present hints and tips for digital photography.
It’s vital to have a mission for your blog; otherwise your posts will wander too much, and you’ll disappoint readers. If your readers expect one thing, give it to them; there are millions of blogs, so it’s very easy to lose readers.
Carefully choosing your topic/ mission helps you to monetize your blog too — you’ll know which advertisers will appreciate your blog and want to advertise on it.
However, before you set out to monetize your blog, create a couple of months’ worth of posts. This assures you that you’ve got your topic/ mission combination exactly right, and that you want to persist with this particular blog. If you feel that you’re uncomfortable, and you can see a way of doing it better, either change your blog’s mission or start a new blog.
If you’re completely new to blogging, you should also create a personal blog. This lets you experiment in various ways — you can write anything you like on your personal blog, and can experiment with plugins, templates and images, as I do with this blog.
Happy blogging!
