Beginning blogging: Building an audience
If you’ve started a blog, you’ll spend the first month or so watching the stats like a hawk. Stop it. Stop it right now. Just hunker down and BLOG.
Your first and most vital aim is to create content, because without content no one will link to you, and until you get links, you won’t get traffic.
Yes, it’s hard developing a traffic stream when you’re new to blogging. I started my first blog on Blogger in around 2002, way before Google bought Blogger. In a sense, I was lucky because I had an audience. At that time, I had a couple of busy ezines which sent traffic to the blog, so I had traffic from the first day.
However, that’s a lot of pressure.
The benefits of blogging when no one knows you
There’s a major benefit to blogging without an audience: you can build up your blogging “voice” without feeling self-conscious, and you can experiment with long posts, short posts, link posts…
So if you’re starting without an audience, relax and enjoy it. You’ll get an audience soon enough. I advise my business blogging clients to blog without trying to get an audience for for three months.
