Apparently there’s a new ebook that’s got the “Internet marketing” community all excited, or the grab-a-buck-and-run part of it anyway.

In Counteracting Tag And Ping Spam, Teli says:

Tagging and social bookmarking are not new, however, it’s just hitting the internet marketing community and that means it will probably get much worse before it gets much better. Since the tag and ping ebook release, it didn’t take very long for some marketers to start spamming the folksonomy websites, but that was inevitable.

If you’re thinking of spamming via tags, consider that sooner or later your site will be banned from the search engines, and rightfully so. Of course, this doesn’t bother the burn merchants, so it will only affect those people new to “Internet marketing” who believe that their actions don’t have consequences. Within a month or two these folks will be complaining that their sites/ blogs have vanished from the SERPs.

Tip: if you’re new to the online marketing world, read WebmasterWorld.com for a couple of weeks to estimate the risk-factor of highly-promoted SEM tactics.

(Why have I put “Internet marketing” in quotes? It’s because Internet marketing, as used by spammers, isn’t marketing at all. Not that I have any problems with that; to each his own, but newbies deserve to be told the whole story.)
