Tip: Develop your Web site’s internal links to improve spidering

by angela.booth on June 1, 2006

Search engines have no conception of “sites”, they index Web pages. Therefore it’s vital that you develop an internal linking strategy for your site, so that all the pages can be spidered. This means that all your pages will be indexed and will show up in searches.

If you do a “site:yoursite.com” search in Google, check how many pages are returned. You’ll often find that you have fewer pages in the index than you thought. Usually this is because pages aren’t linked from the home page, or from other pages which are regularly spidered.
