I like experimenting with sites, and new technology, so early in 2006 I bought a content management system (CMS) and started developing a new site.

The CMS turned out to be a REAL pain, but in February and March I persisted with it and wrote some content for the site, around 300 to 400 words per day.

Unfortunately, I got busy and involved and had to leave the site for a few months.

Late last night I remembered that I owned the site and typed in the URL. To my amazement, this simple little site had gained a Page Rank 4 on the home page in the past three months, and the other pages ranked well too.

What does this mean? To me, it means that:

* Once you have the basics in place, you can leave a site alone, it will pull its own weight;

* With good content, you’ll get backlinks without asking, or doing anything special;

* Content counts. It’s important, but that doesn’t mean that you need to pile 5000 pages of cr*p onto a site. Get some good stuff onto the site, and leave it to find its own level.
