Love this post by Michael Kiely and agree wholeheartedly that you should not allow your ad agency to create your Web site. Look for someone who understands online work:

The online agency understands the principle of ACCESS. People visit websites for access to content and information. You come to the Opera House for what’s on the stage. Not for some bullshit performance by the doorman.

It’s also vital to realize that since (you hope) most people find you via the search engines, they visit your WEB PAGES, they don’t visit your site. This is because the search engines index pages, not entire sites.

Your site’s visitors are looking for specific information on a page. This means that you need to make sure that the information they want is ON THE PAGE: you have only one page to sell them — or to encourage them to explore more of your site.
