Your new Web site: building in-bound links
You’ve got a new Web site, and you need some good quality, one-way inbound links. What do you do?
Start with quality content
Your first step is to create quality content. And no, I’m not just saying this because I’m a copywriter and writing is what I do.
After you’ve generated lots of text content, think audio and video. Podcasts are very popular, because they give a different angle on many topics. You could create a video on how to use your product, or video an interview. You don’t need to hire a video producer and production house to do this; do it yourself.
Send out news releases
Let people know you exist. PR is a time-honored way of getting attention. However, don’t create news releases that are faux ads. Reveal some industry info. Make your releases controversial if you can. Controversy is an excellent link-bait tactic, and of course you stand more chance of being picked up by the mainstream media.
Get a blog
Whenever I create a new site, I install WordPress on it. Once the site is operational, I make some posts on the blog. Then I build the blogroll, giving links to others who have good blogs in that industry. I don’t ask anything for these links. Then I make comments on other blogs, blog about others’ stories, and give trackbacks. After a time, I build relationships, and get links.
Asking people for links
Should you ask other businesses to link to you? Yes, particularly industry organizations in your niche. Be wary when asking individual businesses — form a relationship first. Otherwise you may be accused of spamming.
