1. How to blog your business
Get started (business) blogging
Judging by the questions of my copywriting clients, there’s still a lot of confusion about business blogging, especially about the basics: who should blog, why blog, how blog, when blog, what to blog about about, and where to blog.
Therefore, I’ve decided to create this series on business blogging. I hope it helps you. If you have questions, please ask them in the comments, or you can contact me directly. Of course, if you’d like to hire me to help you set up your blog, I’ll happily do that too. I won’t blog for you, but I will get you started in developing a complete plan for your blog, including a marketing plan.
A blog is just a Web site
Yes, a blog is just a Web site, or a part of your Web site. The major benefit of a blog is that it lets you communicate faster and more easily with all your audiences: your clients, prospective clients, customers, suppliers — all your stakeholders.
Your blog also enhances your visibility, both online and offline. For many businesses, a blog is a better option than a traditional Web site. You can set up a blog in minutes, and anyone can post items to the blog: no special IT or tech experience is necessary.
In May 2005, Business Week Online wrote an excellent explanatory article about blogs and blogging:
Go ahead and bellyache about blogs. But you cannot afford to close your eyes to them, because they’re simply the most explosive outbreak in the information world since the Internet itself. And they’re going to shake up just about every business — including yours. It doesn’t matter whether you’re shipping paper clips, pork bellies, or videos of Britney in a bikini, blogs are a phenomenon that you cannot ignore, postpone, or delegate. Given the changes barreling down upon us, blogs are not a business elective. They’re a prerequisite. (And yes, that goes for us, too.)
That article was written 12 months ago. Everything in the article applies to business today, but more so.
If you’re not blogging your business, you’re letting your business down and missing many opportunities. And I don’t care what kind of business you have.
